This Saturday, Holistic Learning Day on 11 July 2026, the Japanese Language Society and the Korean Language Club jointly organised an activity for the Junior 2 students to explore the Japanese and Korean languages. The activity aimed to introduce students to aspects of Japanese and Korean culture while teaching them useful everyday phrases in both languages.
In the first session of the day, members of the Japanese Language Society visited each Junior 2 classroom to introduce students to the Japanese language. To begin the lesson, they introduced themselves to the students using Japanese, making the students both excited and looking forward to the lesson.
The members then played a video introducing the 50 basic Japanese syllables and several common phrases, such as “Good morning”, “Thank you”, and “I’m sorry”, in Japanese. Afterwards, they guided the students in reading and practising these phrases using the presentation slides. Under the members’ guidance, the students repeated each phrase confidently.
Following this, several students were invited to role-play short conversations in Japanese with one another, giving them an opportunity to apply what they had just learned. The classroom was filled with a fun and lively atmosphere, and the students thoroughly enjoyed the session.
The members then showed a clip from Demon Slayer and played the song AiScReam! (愛♡スクリ～ム！), creating an energetic atmosphere in the classroom. They encouraged the students to join in by singing and performing a memorable part of the song together, which further livened up the lesson. In addition, the members taught the students the lyrics to the Doraemon opening theme, Doraemon no Uta (ドラえもんのうた). To conclude the session, they held a short quiz on common Japanese expressions, including “yatta” (“Hooray!”), “kawaii” (“cute”), and “chotto matte” (“Wait a moment!”).
After a one-hour recess, the students returned to their classrooms for the Korean language session. The members distributed a learning worksheet to each student before introducing the basics of the Korean language. They first taught the students how to pronounce the 19 consonants and 21 vowels of the Korean alphabet. Afterwards, they introduced several basic Korean words, including “사과” (apple), “도서관” (library), and “책” (book).
Next, the members taught the students how to introduce themselves in Korean. They then invited several students to introduce themselves in Korean in front of the class, allowing them to practise what they had learned. Last but not least, the members taught the students the lyrics to two Korean songs, Yellow by Treasure and I by Taeyeon. They explained the meaning of each word and guided the students in singing along, creating a fun and interactive learning experience.
The day was filled with fun and meaningful learning experiences for the Junior 2 students. They had the opportunity to learn useful Japanese and Korean phrases alongside their friends while gaining a deeper appreciation of the two countries’ languages and cultures.
