Science is a vital and evident part of our daily lives. Without science, none of the things that we see and experience will ever make sense to us humans. From the food we eat to the technology we use, science plays a massive role in improving and making our lives much more convenient. Therefore, Kuen Cheng Science Week is organised to encourage students to develop an interest in science and discover its importance through impactful and meaningful activities.
On the crisp and clear day of the 19th of June, Kuen Cheng Science Week 2026 Opening Ceremony was officiated successfully at the basketball court, marking the beginning of yet another exciting week filled with scientific exploration, creativity, and experiments. Students and teachers gathered at the court enthusiastically to celebrate the official launch of this annual event.
At 9:40 A.M., the committee responsible for this year’s Science Week gathered at the basketball court and started setting up for the Opening Ceremony, including lining up chairs and prepping the materials needed for the later experiments. Meanwhile, the Broadcast group was hard at work setting up the audio system for the speeches later. By 9:50 A.M., the set up was complete, the spectators had been seated and the ceremony began.
Before the mind-blowing performances began, the Science week committee presented the principal, vice principals and the teachers in charge with a custom badge specifically made for Science Week. Next came the highly anticipated performances. A mesmerising Diabolo performance wowed the audience with their synchronization, precision and coordination. The performers were given enthusiastic applause for their amazing performance.
One of the unforgettable highlights of this year’s ceremony was the Science Experiment Group’s exciting “Whoosh Bottle” experiment. During the demonstration, the students filled a transparent bottle with a small amount of flammable vapour and ignited it using a wooden stick with flame on it. As the fire entered the bottle, the vapour combusted rapidly, producing a loud “whoosh” sound and a spectacular burst of flame. The experiment effectively illustrated the conditions required for combustion— fuel and oxygen as well as the release of energy during a chemical reaction.
The students gasped in awe as the flame traveled swiftly and quickly through the bottle, creating an impressive visual effect accompanied by a distinctive sound. Under the guidance of teachers and with proper safety precautions in place, the demonstration provided an engaging and memorable learning experience, allowing everyone to appreciate the excitement and wonder of science.
Another unique and memorable moment of the 2026 Science Week opening ceremony was the Banner Reveal Ceremony, which incorporated a fascinating chemistry experiment known as the “Invisible Message Reveal.”. The organizing team had prepared a special scientific demonstration. Earlier, students had used candle wax to write hidden words and designs on a white cloth. Because the wax was transparent, the message remained invisible at first. During the experiment, phenolphthalein solution and sodium carbonate solution were sprayed onto the cloth. Almost magically, the hidden message gradually appeared in bright pink!
This experiment demonstrated the properties of acid-base indicators, as phenolphthalein turns pink in an alkaline environment while the wax-covered areas remain unchanged, revealing the concealed text and patterns. The creative combination of science and ceremony successfully showcased the wonders of chemistry and sparked curiosity among all who attended.
After the Banner Reveal, all the members responsible for the activities for Science Week donned their lab coats and their badges and gathered around the banner for a group photo with the Principal herself. After which the event was officially concluded at 10:05 A.M., students started returning to their classrooms and the committee started cleaning up the court.
