Almost all Junior Three students eventually would have to face a significant decision in their school life — choosing a stream from Science, Arts, or Commerce. This decision is not only based on personal interests but also plays an important role in shaping their future studies and career path.

On 14th June 2025, this batch of students gathered in the school auditorium for a talk designed to guide them in making informed academic choices. Kuen Cheng High School invited Mr. Yap Hock Heng, a Registered Counsellor, to help students better understand their interests, strengths, and ambitions in preparation for a future career.

Mr. Yap began by highlighting that many students often struggle when choosing a stream because they are uncertain about their future goals. This uncertainty can make the decision challenging without proper guidance.

To begin with, Mr. Yap distributed worksheets containing a career assessment based on the Holland Codes, also known as the RIASEC model. This test categorizes jobs into six personality types: Realistic (R), Investigative (I), Artistic (A), Social (S), Enterprising (E), and Conventional (C). Students completed the worksheets thoughtfully while listening to Mr. Yap’s explanations about how their strengths align with different careers.

Following that, Mr. Yap played a short Thai film about a girl named Ploy, who continually pushes herself beyond her comfort zone to pursue her dreams. Using this as an example, he emphasised the importance of having passion and determination when making decisions about the future.

As the session came to a close, Mr. Yap shared an inspiring quote from motivational speaker Simon Sinek: “Dream big, start small. But most of all, start.” His words encouraged students to take the first step towards achieving their dreams, no matter how big or small. The talk ended with a group photo, with students leaving the auditorium feeling more confident and clearer about the path ahead.
