On 15th July 2025, the Senior Middle 2 science stream students attended a talk on quantum computing held in the auditorium. The speakers were Dr Choong Yeow Wei, Mr. Tanveer, and Mr. Elyes, members of the first quantum computing company in Malaysia, SeaQuantum.

Dr. Choong Yeow Wei, also the founder of SeaQuantum, began by stressing the importance of quantum computing, as well as sharing its background and its differences from classical computing. He then proceeded to share the basics of quantum computing. He shares the main concept of Quantum theory, where two electrons that are separated by a far distance from each other would have their properties linked. When the properties of the first electron were measured, the properties of the second electron would be known instantly, even faster than the speed of light. Dr. Choong then continued by sharing the key characteristics of quantum computing, that is, “Superposition”, a state where matter exists in more than one state at the same time, and “Entanglement”, a phenomenon where two particles can transfer data instantly, regardless of their distance. Summarising his speech, he discussed the future of quantum computing and the impact that it may bring. Emphasising the global contribution to quantum computing and sharing the global discussions of “The End of Moore’s Law”, Dr. Choong urges the students to value quantum computing research and hopes that the students can take something out from this talk.
To carry on, Dr. Choong passed the torch to Mr. Elyes to continue the speech. To kickstart his presentation, he introduced the fundamentals of RSA encryption to the students. He stated that RSA, a key-encryption system commonly used in the modern world, solves the fundamental trust issues in the modern age. He explained the difference between public and private keys used in cryptography to decrypt information in modern society, and how RSA functions in this system. He further explained that RSA worked by multiplying large prime numbers to get a cryptic code, which is then factorised using the keys in our devices to obtain information. Mr. Elyes then brought out Shor’s Algorithm, which utilises Fourier transform and periodicity detection technology, and explained how it can break the RSA within mere seconds. He stressed that when RSA is broken, the internet would not be safe anymore, leaving anything and everything online exposed to the fierce talons of hackers.

To follow up Mr. Elyes, Mr. Tanveer stepped up onto the stage and officially introduced TuringQ, a Chinese company in partnership with SEAQuantum. He talked about the accomplishments of the company and introduced Xianmin Jin, the director of TuringQ. He then explained where the funding of TuringQ was obtained from and how they were able to compete for a spot as one of China’s quantum research companies.
Following his speech, Mr. Tanveer then let the spotlight shine on the next event of the talk, an online live talk conducted by TuringQ themselves. Mr. Vincent Bai, a sales and marketing manager of TuringQ, starts off the talk by introducing QBox, a software focused on the education of quantum technology. He then let Ms Zong take over, and she explained how QBox worked. To summarise the live talk, she introduced the various topics covered in the software and selectively explained the important concepts to allow the students to understand how quantum technology works. She truly allowed the students to expand their knowledge and set their sights on the future of technology.
With the end of Ms. Zong’s talk, the talk officially came to an end. Many students approached Mr. Choong with the intention of understanding more about SEAQuantum, to which he was delighted to divulge their knowledge to their inquiries. All in all, the talk was undoubtedly a fruitful event that the students will not be able to forget anytime soon.
