An online introductory course on Western Instruments was prepared and conducted by Kuen Cheng Wind Orchestra (KCWO). The course, held over two days — May 29th and June 5th. Students who attended were given a basic introduction to the instruments currently used by the KCWO.

The introductions were carried out via Zoom video meeting platfom. Section leaders and senior members of each section filmed and videos in advance talking about their instruments, giving insight into the history of their development, how they function, and what they sound like.

The first day of the course focused mainly on brass wind instruments. The instruments introduced were the French horn, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, and tuba. Also introduced on that day was the drum set, where a percussionist from KCWO demonstrated the types of beats used in different forms of music.

Woodwind instruments were introduced on the second day of the course, with videos prepared by the flute, clarinet, saxophone, and double reed sections. Though only four sections were involved, many more instruments than that were introduced as these sections comprise large families of instruments.

This course was an easily digestible glimpse at the vast world of music. Naturally, there is much more to music than what was talked about in the course. Hopefully, this course inspires students to explore music in depth.
