Beginning at 8.00 a.m. on 3/10 Holistic Learning Day, which aims to provide students with activities on Saturdays, Kuen Cheng High School is full of anticipation and joy. The usually quiet open-air car park, in front of Block A, was filled with laughter, movement and the sound of music as the Physical Education Training Team brought Junior 2 students together for an energetic outdoor activity. Held during the examination season, this special arrangement gave students a much-needed opportunity to take a refreshing break from their books and enjoy some physical activity with their classmates.

The morning began with a series of warm-up exercises. Students completed six squats, six lunges and six squat jumps, followed by six seconds each of jumping jacks, high knees and butt kicks. The short but energetic routine quickly got the students moving and prepared them for the main event.

Highlight of the day was a game similar to Pass the Parcel, with volleyball. Standing in a large circle that stretched around the car park, students passed the volleyball from one person to another while music played. Once the music stopped, however, the student holding the ball was left with a choice between completing a physical “punishment” or receiving a fun reward.

The excitement did not stop there. Between rounds, students were instructed to turn clockwise and anti-clockwise several times, adding an unexpected challenge to the game. With everyone hoping that the music would stop when the ball was in someone else’s hands, the activity was filled with excitement, and enthusiastic cheers.

But behind all the fun was a more meaningful purpose: helping students cope with the pressures of examination season.

When asked, “Why did you and the PE Department choose to host this activity during exam season?”, Teacher Tan Wu Heng explained that the activity was organised to relieve some of the stress and pressure students experience during examinations. He also shared that in previous years, the department had organised dances and Zumba sessions, but these activities did not receive a particularly positive response from students. Therefore, the department decided to switch things up this year by introducing a game.

After the excitement of the game, students relaxed and recharged. Again, a mild cool-down was introduced before coming together for a group photograph. What began as a simple morning activity became a refreshing break from revision, giving students the chance to exercise, laugh and spend time with their peers.

As examinations continue, this activity offers students a fun chance to step away from their books, recharge, and return to studying refreshed.
