The 11th Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Negeri Sembilan Independent Chinese Secondary Schools English Forum Competition was a resounding success! Initiated by The United Chinese School Committees’ Association of Selangor and Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur, this event was jointly organized by independent schools in these states on a rotational basis, with Kuen Cheng High School proudly hosting in 2025.

On Saturday, 16 August 2025, students from eight independent Chinese secondary schools in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur gathered at the Kuen Cheng High School Auditorium, starting at 8 a.m. The atmosphere was filled with joy and confidence as participants prepared to showcase their skills.

This competition aims to enhance the English proficiency of independent school students, particularly focusing on developing their oral communication skills. It also raises their awareness of current social issues, providing a platform for students to demonstrate their public speaking abilities while fostering collaboration and interaction among participants from various schools.

The competition featured a diverse range of topics, including life, society, culture, economics, education, the environment, language and art, science and technology, agriculture, sports, and health. Each school team was tasked with presenting their chosen topic in a 15-minute discussion followed by a 5-minute Q&A session with the adjudicators. The judging panel evaluated performances based on seven key criteria: content, fluency, language accuracy, logical coherence, pronunciation, style, and overall performance.

In his congratulatory address, Tan Sri William Cheng Heng Jem, Chairman of Kuen Cheng High School, emphasized the importance of English as a global language in today’s interconnected world. He encouraged students at independent Chinese schools to pursue not only academic excellence but also to enhance their communication and critical thinking skills. Tan Sri urged participants to value this opportunity, express themselves courageously, actively listen, and engage in mutual learning throughout the competition. Tan Sri William Cheng expressed gratitude to the Association for their unwavering support, as well as to the judging panel and teachers for their dedication. Tan Sri encouraged all contestants to give their best performance, stating, “Regardless of the outcome, you are all the bravest speakers today.”

The winning team consists of the Top Three Awards, the Excellence Award, the Encouragement Award, the Best Chairperson Award, and the Best Speaker Award. The results are as follows:

Champion: Hin Hua High School

First Runner-up: Tsun Jin High School

Second Runner-up: Pin Hwa High School

Excellence Award: Kuen Cheng High School, Chong Hwa Independent High School

Encouragement Award: Confucian Private Secondary School, Sekolah Menengah Chung Hua (PSDN.) Klang, Kwang Hua Private High School

Best Chairperson Award: Eethan Aw, and the Best Speaker Award: Chong Sze Ching. Both are students from Chong Hwa Independent High School
