On Monday, 17 February 2020, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Malaysia had organised a press conference about the Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL). It is similar to the TOEFL English test, but in Chinese Language. This press conference is held in Kuen Cheng High School. The organiser started with a briefing session about TOCFL to the media representatives.

The test will be held on Saturday, 25 April 2020 at 10 o’clock in the morning at Kuen Cheng High School. Everyone who is interested in finding out their Chinese language skills and wanted to participate in this test is welcome. One who wishes to participate can register through their official website, https://tofcl.sc-top.org.tw/zoom/. Deadline for the registration will be on 25 March 2020.

About the fee for TOCFL Test is RM120. In order to encourage more students to participate in this test, every 10 individuals and more will receive a 10% discount. This discount is only applicable to students and individuals from education institutions. Fee must be paid in three days once a registration is complete. Result for the test will be announced one month later after the test.

The TOCFL acts as a useful and standardized assessment tool for Chinese proficiency levels which is in corresponding with CEFR and ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines. There are three bands available for 2020 TOCFL in Malaysia, namely Band A, Band B and Band C. Candidate shall enroll the suitable test type. For the target test takers for each band and more information, downloading of mock test questions is available from this website: http://www.sc-top.org.tw/mocktest.php.

Director of this education institute, Ms. Charlin Chang said in addition to the official test TOCFL every year, they will be organising a Pre-Test. It needs help from our school to communicate for the Pre-Test Preparation. This Pre-Test is offered totally free-of-charge; it will later provide with the result but without a certificate.

Besides that, the Secretary of TECO said that they will be offering a variety of Taiwan Scholarships for students who wish to study their Masters’ Degree or a PhD. Next, there will also be a Chinese Scholarship provided to Malaysians to study and do research on Chinese culture. Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF) Scholarship Program is open to Malaysian students to pursue specific Master or Doctoral Degree Program in eighteen Partner Universities of ICDF. There are a total of 223 academic programs available with this scholarship. Additionally, Ms. Charlin Chang said that the team also welcome schools to organise a short term Taiwan education trip to go to the Top 61 Chinese language centres for further studies.
